Description of Concentration, Including Main Questions or Areas to be Explored

The purpose of this division 2 is to take the next step towards engaging with the world. Although this idea on the one hand sounds overly simplistic -- almost a truism, perhaps -- the common ground it provides is important to our understanding of this part of my education. In essence, my question is "In what ways can I contribute to my own well-being, and to the improvement of the human condition?"

Vitally important, then, has been the general examination of the human condition, and direct intervention into improving it. My division 2 works with this idea through classes, community service, and "outside dabblings." My classes provide a background of human civilization. This includes work in literature, education, history, and in a foreign language (German). My community service work -- as coordinator and administrator of the Student Information Network, as a Quantitative Skills tutor, as a teaching assistant, as organizer and teadcher for swing and contra dances, as an admissions host, as a school member, as an Educational Policy Committee member, and as a Senator -- has allowed me to really explore my role as a Community-buildre. "Outside Dabblings" includes learning that did not fit properly into a class, such as independent readings, scientific experiments, and a vast improvement of my instrumental and vocal abilities.

Secondly, I have entered into a significant engagement with the field of computer science. This engagement -- including projects, classes, independent studies and summer research -- has provided me with a field in which I have productive and marketable knowledge and talent. It has provided me with the depth that is expected of an undergraduate computer-science major, especially strong in those areas generally considered more challenging. Thereby, it provides me with a field in which I can easily attent graduate school or become employed.

The portfolio that will be the basis for the evaluation of this work will include formal evaluations and grades for official classes, informal evaluations for informal studies, and a retrospective. Informal studies refers to what are listed on the previous page as informal independent studies, those subjects that are ordinarily covered in a class but which I learned through independent work. Those subjects not formally or informally evaluated will be incorporated into the retrospective.
