Most Johnston students fulfill their cross-cultural requirement through a term or year studying in another University, in a foreign country. There are of course some students who insist the term abroad does not fit into their life, and try to do something else. Depending on their Graduation Contract Committee, they may or may not be able to get the something else approved. One example of an alternative to a semester abroad for one student was to spend a month traveling around Mexico, keeping a journal.
In the Johnston College days, many more students traveled, rather than went to a University, for their cross-cultural requirement. Often, the travel was for a month, two months, or even a semester, but generally not a year, as it often is now. The whole year away from school is in some ways hard for the community because it means that younger students do not have the experience of those students to draw on; yet for some students, that time apart from the community is vital to avoiding burnout.
