Division III Conclusion and Appendix Introduction

Why? and Division III Conclusion

Why an Appendix? My goal in my education has never been the development of one particular part of me. Rather, it is about the integrated development of my ideas, my emotions, my actions, and my relationship as a teacher, friend, Hampshire student, lover...

As I described in Part I, until this Division III, I had only rarely and partially been successful in making my official education related to my growth as a human. In this Division III, for the first time, I have made my official education really reflect my life, and for the first time, I feel I've been successful in conceptualizing and making a record of the growth which has taken place. Of these accomplishments, I am very proud. To be altogether honest, I didn't realize this is what the Division III was about until the 22nd of December - 15 days before the last possible due date. Just in the nick of time to write this!

Since this is the first time I have conceptualized and recorded my holistic growth, I've chosen to catch up a bit on lost time. Thus, both the narrative and these various Appendices go back in time to before I officially filed my contract, and in some cases, to before I arrived at Hampshire or on planet earth.

My main goals in the Appendix: to bring together sides of my development I have not captured in previous sections of this Division III; to show that integrated life is possible (if difficult) for a student at Hampshire College and to show an example of this; to leave some evidence of EPEC and AHEN so others can see what it takes to start and run such things.

What?

The Documentation section of the Appendix contains documents relevant to my personal development and to the work I have done in alternative higher education (officially, the title of this division III is ``Teaching, Writing, and Program Development in Higher Education.'') It is chronologically arranged and cataloged in the Documentation Index. Additionally, there are timelines which detail the development of the Experimental Program in Education and Community and the Alternative Higher Education Network. There is commentary in both the timelines and the index - in the Index if the commentary is about the document itself, and in one of the timelines if it is about the development of the program. Additionally, there is a section of some of my songs and poems. Although there is some overlap between ``The Story'' (part I) and the Documentation, part I primarily covers the period before the fall of 1995, and the Documentation primarily covers the period beginning with that fall.

How?

Depending on your goals in reading this document, there will be several ways to approach these appendices.

Suppose you are interested in my development as a person, an educator, or a leader. In this case, you would probably use the main Documentation Index as your chronological guide. You might read through the Index, and flip to parts of the Documentation now and again to read the actual documents.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in starting a program like EPEC at another college, you would want to use the EPEC timeline as your main guide. Or if you are interested in the history of AHEN, or ideas about how you could become involved as a participant or leader in AHEN, then you would use the AHEN timeline. In any case, the timelines include references in parenthesis to documents in the Documentation.
